When Pain Stopped Me
Finding A Way Through
January 10, 2019
I stumbled upon this path the other day. I remember the first time I encountered it. It looked like a massive challenge to me at the time.
I was (figuratively and literally) climbing my way back to being healthy after my body had broken down.
Stairs of any kind struck fear into me because of the pain I felt going up them. I didn’t know how I was going to navigate the world with what was becoming chronic pain. Difficulty walking. Overwhelming anxiety. What had happened to me? And how was I going to live in this body when I used to train 20+ hrs a week as a cyclist. What happened to my strength? I felt utterly weak and lost.
And yet. Encountering this set of “stairs” in the forest later became a huge milestone for me. I’d already done so much work with my body and my mind (and especially my nervous system, though I didn’t really realize it at the time).
I’d actually given up all other forms of rehab as they all felt like too much, like they caused a “flare” and made me worse. So. I just, walked. I scoured North Vancouver for places I could walk that were flat and in the forest. And I very, very gradually added in gentle inclines.
I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was pacing myself finally. And allowing my body to slowly heal. So when I was finally able to walk (very slowly) up this trail for the first time, I felt TRIUMPHANT! I was sweating, out of breath, and ecstatic. I knew I’d turned a corner.
So while it doesn’t look like much now. It was big for me at the time. And oh so very satisfying to just breeze up it when I stumbled upon this trail again the other day.
And now. I seek to help those that are on a healing journey. When things are tough and body, mind, or spirit feel like they have been broken. You are trying to find a way back, and maybe you find most things a bit too much, too overwhelming right now.
I’m here for you. And while I’m not walking your road, I may have walked one just like it, and I’d be honored to walk alongside you. To support you. To support your body to heal. To help calm your mind. And to soothe your spirit.
Does something resonate with you as you read this? It just takes the first step, to reach out and connect. Drop me a line and let me know what’s on your mind. You can reach me at lisa (at) combinationhealing.ca
